The Academy

A rehearsal hall with a lineage

Nritya began in 1997 with one Kalakshetra-trained guru, eleven students and a rented hall above a sweet shop on Sarat Bose Road. The rule Guru Sharmila Chatterjee set on day one still stands: we do not teach steps, we hand down a tradition — which means small batches, live taalam, and no student on stage before they are ready to honour it.

Twenty-eight years later the academy fills three sprung-floor studios, sends a hundred and twenty dancers to Rabindra Sadan every winter for the Annual Showcase, and still begins every class the old way — with a namaskaram to the floor, the guru and the audience yet to come.

  • Guru-shishya parampara, small batches
  • Sprung wooden floors & mirrored studios
  • Live nattuvangam & tabla accompaniment
  • Salangai puja & arangetram mentoring
  • Annual Showcase at Rabindra Sadan
  • Certified gradings — Prayag & Bhatkhande

Why Nritya

Taught the way it was handed down

No. 01

Gurus who still perform

Every discipline is led by a guru with a living stage career — you learn choreography that has faced an audience, not just a mirror.

No. 02

Small batches, real attention

Twelve students per batch, never more. Your guru knows your name, your taalam troubles and exactly which count you rush.

No. 03

A real stage every year

The Annual Showcase at Rabindra Sadan is written into the syllabus. Every student — five or sixty-five — bows under professional lights.

No. 04

Lineage, documented

Kalakshetra and Lucknow gharana training, Prayag and Bhatkhande certifications — your progress is graded, certified and recognised outside these walls.

The Gurus

Lineage you can learn from

Four gurus, four traditions — each carrying a gharana or bani that predates the microphone.

Green Room Stories

What the parents say

My daughter joined at six because her friends did. Eight years later she has her Prayag certificate, 32 chakkars and a spine like a queen. Nritya raised her posture and her patience.

Sohini Dasgupta
Sohini DasguptaParent · Kathak, since 2018

I started Bharatanatyam at 41, terrified. Sharmila di put me in a beginners' batch with three other adults and treated us like future performers, not a hobby class. Last December I danced at Rabindra Sadan.

Priyanka Ghosh
Priyanka GhoshAdult student, since 2022

Rohan directed our entire sangeet — nine acts, forty relatives, one uncle with zero rhythm. On the night it looked like a film set. Worth every rupee and every rehearsal.
