Our story

A tapri that moved upstairs

For nine years Vicky Rathi ran a chai tapri at the mouth of Hauz Khas Village — a stove, a kettle, a bench and a Parle-G box. In 2019 the landlord upstairs offered him the terrace, Pooja Sethi brought her Maggi recipe and the deposit, and Tapri became a café without ever really becoming one.

The chai is still boiled in the same dented aluminium pan. The pav still comes on the Rajdhani from a bakery in Dadar. The prices are still written in marker on cardboard, and the stickers on the walls are still put up by whoever finishes their eighth chai.

  • Chai boiled to order, never kept on the stove

  • Terrace open till 12:30 AM, every night
  • Board games, plug points and a lake view
  • Every 8th chai free on the stamp card

Good to know

The terrace is stairs-only (first floor). Dogs welcome on the terrace. Board games and a plug point at every table. Live cricket on the small TV, on request, loudly.

Why the tapri

Small place, strong chai

Boiled to order

No urn, no thermos, no chai sitting on the stove since morning. Four minutes per glass, every glass.

Open past midnight

The terrace runs till 12:30 AM. Maggi at 11 PM is not a request, it's a right.

Tapri prices, upstairs

Cutting chai has been ₹20 since we moved up. Rent went up; the chai didn't.

Direct, not through apps

Order here and we skip the 25% commission — which is how the Maggi stays at ₹110.

Came for one cutting chai at 11 PM, left at 12:30 with a Maggi, a brownie and three new friends from the next table. This is what Hauz Khas used to be like.

The chai cart at our office launch was the only thing anyone talked about the next day. Bread pakora at 4 PM for 200 people, and they still had the terrace open when we came to say thanks.

Poetry night is chaotic, sincere and the kesar chai is worth the climb. I've filled two stamp cards. The eighth chai really is free, I checked.
