The Shop

Three generations of tashan

In 1962, Sardar Kartar Singh Chhabra put one chair, one mirror and one strop outside Gandhi Gate and started shaving Hall Bazaar's traders for four annas. He believed a barber's job was not just cutting hair — it was sending a man out with his collar up. The mirror is still ours. So is the belief.

His grandson Jaswinder runs the shop today, with his own son beside him on chair two. The rate board is still painted by hand, the towels still come off the steamer hissing, and the sarson-oil champi is still strong enough to fix a bad week. We have added skin fades and beard colour to the board — but nothing leaves this shop half-done.
